Special Lecture in French
From France to SW Nevada Lecture
Friday, May 5, 2017
A History and life of Belgium emigres in the early 1920’s
The program features in particular the life of the young French speaking couple, Bessie and Joe Feys, who worked a mine (B & B Mine) at Red Rock in the mountains of Southwest Nevada, near Tonopah.
Their life in Nevada is told by this young woman’s letters and photographs sent to her family in her native land telling about their day to day life in harsh conditions in the years 1936 and 1937, working with this dangerous mercury with simple tools of the time.
This program came together by having the Newcomer’s group assist the Society with the translation of the Feys family photos and letters at the Nevada Historical Society.
The meeting/lecture will be mostly in French, as the program is put on by the Newcomers Club’s French Conversations interest section… but is open to anyone interested in attending the talk.
