This month’s guest speaker is Mark S. Bacon. He will talk about his latest mystery book called Desert Kill Switch.

Desert Kill Switch is the second novel in my Nostalgia City mystery series published by Black Opal Books. Nostalgia City is an unusual theme park in central Arizona. It’s a meticulous recreation of an entire small town as it would have appeared in the mid-1970s, complete with period cars, clothes, food, hairstyles, music, shops, fads, and everything else necessary to recreate the past. Some of the inspiration for creating Nostalgia City came from Hot August Nights. And in fact, the majority of my new book takes place in Reno, during the summertime classic car event.

Brief bio:

Mark S. Bacon began his career as a southern California newspaper police reporter, one of his crime stories becoming key evidence in a murder case that spanned decades.

After working for two newspapers, he moved to advertising and marketing when he became a copywriter for Knott’s Berry Farm, the large theme park down the road from Disneyland. Experience working at Knott’s formed part of the inspiration for his creation of Nostalgia City theme park.

Before turning to fiction, Bacon wrote business books including Do-It-yourself Direct Marketing, printed in four languages and three editions, named best business book of the year by Library Journal, and selected by the Book of the Month Club and two other book clubs. His articles have appeared in the Washington Post, Cleveland Plain Dealer,San Antonio Express News, and many other publications. Most recently he was a correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Writers’ Wednesday Lecture Series, held the second Wednesday of each month, features a different author who takes part in a book signing, a presentation and a question-and-answer session with the audience.

The intent of the program is to highlight writers that specifically focus on Nevada, the Great Basin or the West in general. The authors talk about the content of their books, but also share details about the creative process.

Admission to Writers’ Wednesday is $5 for adults; free for members and children 17 and younger. Seating is limited and attendees are encouraged to arrive early to get their seats. For more information, call (775) 688-1190.
