Writers’ Wednesday Jan 9

Wednesday, January 9, 2019

5:00 – 5:30 pm – Wine and Cheese reception
5:30 – 6:30 pm – Lecture

Please join us for an evening with guest author, Dr. Christine Johnson, who will discuss Geographic Place Names in Nevada.

Did you know that Nevada is considered to be the most mountainous state in the country?

Dr. Christine Johnson is the Collection Manager at the Nevada Historical Society and adjunct faculty in the departments of Anthropology and Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno.

This talk will provide a history of the Nevada State Board on Geographic Names, operational procedures, provide a look at why and how features get named and highlight a few interesting and noteworthy features on the Nevada landscape.

Her most recent publication on geographic topics can be found in Explorations in Place Attachment, Routledge 2019.

The Writers’ Wednesday Lecture Series, held the second Wednesday of each month, features a different author who takes part in a book signing, a presentation and a question-and-answer session with the audience. A wine and cheese reception precedes the lecture.

The intent of the program is to highlight writers who specifically focus on Nevada, the Great Basin, or the West in general. The authors talk about the content of their books but also share details about the creative process.

Seating is limited.  Arrive early to ensure yourself a seat in our Events Space!

Admission is $5 for adults; free for children 17 and younger and for Nevada Historical Society members. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early as seating is limited. For details, call 688-1190.
