SUMMARY:Writers' Wednesday - On The GO! - The Redemption of Julia Bulette: Murder\, Myth & the hunt for a Serial Killer in early Virginia City (Off-site\, KOP)
DESCRIPTION:Writers’ Wednesday – On The GO!\nWednesday\, October 14 \, 2026\n5:00 – 5:30 pm – Building open\n5:30 – 6:30 pm – Lecture \nSpeaker: Robin Flinchum\, author\n \nBook Title: The Redemption of Julia Bulette: Murder\, Myth & the hunt for a Serial Killer in early Virginia City \nSummary of Talk: \nOne chilly January night in 1867\, a Virginia City prostitute was strangled to death in her bed. \nThe murderer was caught and hanged in front of a crowd of thousands\, and the citizens of the Comstock considered the matter closed. More than 150 years later\, the murder of Julia Bulette has become a local legend. \nThe man accused\, John Millain\, was suspected of killing before\, but there would be no justice for those victims. Reduced to vague mentions in newspaper articles\, little was left to tie their unsolved murders to that of Julia’s. Did John Millain leave a trail of tragedy that stretched from San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood to Julia’s untimely end in Virginia City? \nAuthor and award-winning journalist Robin Flinchum searches for the truth behind a string of murders in two of the richest cities in the early American West. \nRobin Flinchum\, author \nSpeaker Bio: Robin Flinchum is an award-winning journalist and historian whose work explores crime\, myth\, and memory in the early American West. Trained in journalism at San Francisco State University\, she brings investigative rigor and narrative precision to nineteenth-century sources. She is the author of Red Light Women of Death Valley\, the first book to recover the lives of women long erased from the region’s mining-camp history. Her research has reshaped the historical record and inspired permanent museum exhibits in California and Nevada. \nThe Writers’ Wednesday Lecture Series\, held on the second Wednesday of each month\, features a different author who takes part in a book signing\, a presentation\, and a question-and-answer session with the audience. \nThe program intends to highlight writers who focus on Nevada\, the Great Basin\, or the West in general. The authors discuss the content of their books but also share details about the creative process. \nWe would like to thank our partner\, the Knights of Pythias\, for hosting our off-site lectures. \nThe Knights of Pythias fraternal organization promotes friendship among men and for the general welfare of its membership. They strive to make the world a better place by practicing the principles of friendship\, charity\, and benevolence through community service. The Knights of Pythias have been serving Nevada communities since the 1870s. There are only three active lodges left in the State of Nevada. The address is 980 Nevada Street\, Reno\, NV 89503. \n

SUMMARY:Nevada History: On The GO! – Refining the Story Josie Reed Ames Pearl Rasmussen Moreasti: A Tale of Bonanza Argentiferous Ore or Barren Tails (Off-site\, SVL)
DESCRIPTION:November 7\, 2026\, 1 – 2:30 pm\nSpeaker: Richard Dorman\, historian and geologist\nTitle of Talk: Refining the Story Josie Reed Ames Pearl Rasmussen Moreasti: A Tale of Bonanza Argentiferous Ore or Barren Tails \nJosie Pearl\, 1951 \nThis presentation explores the fascinating story of Josie Reed Ames Pearl Rasmussen Moreasti\, an early woman storyteller prospector and one of Nevada’s most colorful figures\, remembered as the “Queen of the Black Rock Desert.” \nJosephine’s family would move to Sanford in the San Luis Valley in Colorado\, where she claims she developed an interest in mining at a young age. In1895\, Josie is visiting friends in Lamar and living in Alamosa\, Colorado. On February 27\, 1896\, Josie married Eugene F. Ames in Alamosa\, where they set up house. And Josie joins the Central Christian Church of Alamosa. Josie and Eugene move from Alamosa to Bachelor Town in 1900\, where Eugene is a miner and Josie is a housewife. To defray costs\, they take in two new arrivals in town as boarders\, Monti and Lane Pearl. By May 22\, 1903\, Lane and Josie are married\, and Eugene is not around. Barry Lane and Josie move to Jasper\, south of Creede\, where Lane gets a contract from a friend\, Walter Boyle\, to drive a tunnel. He is not a mining engineer and never attended Stanford. Barry makes friends with the right people\, and by 1907\, he is elected county commissioner. \nThe couple remained in the Creede area until 1909\, when Walter Boyle asked him to go to Ward\, White Pine County\, Nevada\, where he would drive a new Adit into a silver property for Boyle and then have several other jobs in Ely. In 1918\, one of his employees goes to a victory celebration for the end of WWI. The employee returns and infects five people at the mine with Spanish Flu. Lane Pearl gets sick and dies in 1918 in Ely. Josie stays in Ely\, runs a hotel\, mingles in society\, and plays cards with Vail Pittman’s wife. She got married to Henry Rasmussen in Salt Lake on December 5\, 1919\, and spent some time in Colorado with family but returned to SLC and then Nevada by May of 1920\, without\, husband #3. Josie returns to Ely where she is the hostess for numerous dinners and social events. 1924 Josie marries Leo Moreasti. \nIn 1928\, Josie grubstaked Guy Bishop to stake claims for her in the Columbia Mining District in Humboldt County. She built a cabin in Cove Canyon near the Black Rock Desert. In 1930 she moves to Bodie\, California where she lived for 2 years until a fire destroyed the boarding house she was running\, Josie then returns to her cabin in Cove Canyon where she remains for the next 38 years. She divorced her 4th husband in 1936. Josie returns to live on the Black Rock Desert\, where she begins her reign as the Tugboat Annie of the desert. Our speaker will share new\, previously unknown facts about Josie Pearl. \nSpeaker Bio: \nRichard H. Dorman is a man of many passions\, including history\, music\, theater\, and geology—interests he enthusiastically shares with others. His deep fascination with the history of Jarbidge\, Nevada\, and the last stagecoach mail robbery in 1916 led him to uncover and revive the stories of several women whose contributions had long been overlooked or forgotten. \nAn active performer\, Mr. Dorman appears in productions at the White Stage Theater in Winnemucca and participates annually in San Francisco’s Dickens Fair\, where he performs with multiple choral ensembles and lectures on paleontology. He is also a skilled historical costumer\, creating reproduction garments for a variety of performing groups. \nRichard Dorman\, speaker \nMr. Dorman earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the Mackay School of Mines at the University of Nevada\, Reno in 1976. His career in mining and mineral exploration spans more than 46 years and includes extensive work with sediment-hosted mineralized deposits across Colorado\, Wyoming\, Utah\, Arizona\, Mexico\, Canada\, Australia\, Indonesia\, and Nevada. He has held senior positions in the industry\, including Vice President of Exploration at Universal Uranium Ltd.\, and has worked with companies such as Getchell Gold Corporation\, Hunt Oil\, Coastal Chemical Corporation\, Dyno Nobel\, Atlas Minerals\, and Plateau Resources

SUMMARY:Writers' Wednesday - On The GO! - Horse Girl: Wild Horse Annie Book (Off-site\, KOP)
DESCRIPTION:Writers’ Wednesday – On The GO!\nWednesday\, December 9\, 2026\n5:00 – 5:30 pm – Building open\n5:30 – 6:30 pm – Lecture \nSpeaker: Terri Farley\, author\n \nBook Title: Horse Girl: How Velma Bronn Johnston Became Wild Horse Annie and Outsmarted the Mustang Killers of the West \nSummary of Talk: The American mustang—wild\, wind-tossed\, and thundering across the open West—might have vanished into myth if not for Velma Bronn Johnston. A shy woman who was left with physical effects from a childhood battle with polio\, Johnston was living a quiet life on a struggling ranch near Reno\, Nevada\, when she discovered wild horses being brutally transported to slaughter. Outraged\, she reported it—only to be offered a permit allowing her to do the same horrific deed. But instead of backing down\, Johnston took a stand. \nHer refusal to profit from cruelty launched her into a firestorm of activism\, upending her life. Laughed at\, threatened\, and dismissed\, she pressed on. When a rival mocked her as “Wild Horse Annie\,” she seized the name as a badge of honor and purpose. Embracing her new identity\, she began to raid illegal holding pens under the cover of darkness\, captivated the media\, and became the voice of a movement. Her biggest allies were schoolchildren across America\, whose letter-writing campaign swept the country. \nJohnston’s commitment to these majestic animals was finally recognized in 1971 when Congress unanimously passed legislation to protect the nation’s wild horses—an enduring victory for one determined woman and the animals she refused to abandon. \nAward-winning author Terri Farley presents the captivating story of Horse Girl\, revealing Velma Bronn Johnston in a new light through previously unpublished family photos and journal entries. Farley’s storytelling brings Johnston’s unwavering courage into the spotlight\, revealing a woman determined to protect the wild mustang—no matter the cost. \nTerri Farley\, author \nSpeaker Bio:  Terri Farley has always loved books\, horses\, and wild places. One of those wild places was inner-city Los Angeles\, where she first taught high school English and journalism before moving to Nevada. Farley now rides and hikes the range and spends time researching and writing the books that have made her an acclaimed author and advocate for the West’s wildlife—especially wild horses. She is the author of the Phantom Stallion adventure series and Wild at Heart: Mustangs and the Young People Fighting to Save Them. She was inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame in 2017. \n

SUMMARY:High Noon - December program\, The Law of the Miner: The Arizona Experience Book (Virtual Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:High Noon\nDecember 17\, 2026\nNoon \nRegister for this Lecture: \nTitle: The Law of the Miner: The Arizona Experience Book\, from the University of Nevada Press\, will be released on September 15\, 2026 \nSpeaker: John C. Lacy\, author and historian \nTalk Summary:\nThe first adventurers into the New World faced a fundamental legal challenge: how to secure rights to any mineral claims they discovered. Early conquistadors worked under charters that required them to return a portion of their findings to the Spanish crown\, but those without such charters had no formal protection\, and the crown was slow to clarify individual rights. This uncertainty only grew as miners pushed into the lands that would become the Western United States.\nWhen gold was discovered in California\, miners suddenly found themselves operating without any governing laws during the period between the end of the war with Mexico and the establishment of formal U.S. jurisdiction. In response\, and without official sanction\, they formed self-governing “mining districts\,” best understood as mutual protection societies. These districts marked the first organized attempt to define boundaries and create rules for establishing and maintaining mining claims. As the early rushes in California and Nevada subsided\, miners carried these practices with them into Arizona and other western territories.\nIn Arizona\, no comprehensive collection of these early regulations has ever existed. The Law of the Miner addresses this gap by tracing the development of mineral law in early Arizona and presenting the full text of every mining district regulation found. This work serves both the mining industry and historians seeking to identify the individuals involved in creating the districts and to understand these districts’ historical boundaries. \nJohn Lacy\, author and his dog \nSpeaker Bio: John C. Lacy is a mining lawyer and mining law historian who has\, throughout his career\, analyzed and written about the contributions of mineral adventurers to the development of the law as it was applied to the acquisition of mineral rights. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in journalism in 1964 and one in law in 1967. Lacy has represented mineral clients throughout the western United States and in South America and has taught mineral law and related subjects at the University of Arizona since 1976. His historical activities include work with the Arizona Historical Society\, the Arizona History Convention\, and the Society of Mining Law Antiquarians. \nThe subject of The Law of the Miner came naturally to Lacy as he grew up in the Peruvian mining camp of La Oroya\, and during college\, he worked as a fieldhand for several mining exploration companies. Presently\, he is the director of the Global Mining Law Center at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona\, where he teaches and supervises several online courses. He also continues to practice law at his firm\, DeConcini McDonald Yetwin & Lacy\, P.C.

SUMMARY:High Noon - Nevada Names and the Stories on our Maps(Virtual Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:High Noon\nJanuary 21\, 2027\nNoon \nRegister for this Lecture: \nDr. Christine Johnson\, historian \nTitle: Nevada Names and the Stories on our Maps \nSpeaker: Dr. Christine Johnson\, historian\, UNR Adjunct Professor\, and Sparks Heritage Museum Executive Director \nTalk Summary: What’s in a name? When it comes to Nevada’s mountains\, valleys\, rivers\, towns\, and landmarks\, the answer can be surprisingly complicated—and occasionally contentious. Geographic names are more than labels on a map; they reflect history\, culture\, power\, memory\, language\, and our changing relationship with the landscape. \nIn this talk\, we will highlight some of Nevada’s interesting history seen in geographic names\, ranging from mining camps to politicians\, explorers to the natural wonders immortalized on our lands. We’ll also look at some of Nevada’s more controversial names and the questions they raise: who gets to name a place\, whose history gets remembered and what happens when a name that once was ordinary becomes unacceptable? \nSpeaker Bio: Christine Johnson has served on the Nevada State Board on Geographic Names\, the Council of Geographic Naming Authorities and the Federal Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names\, and was the Chair of the Subcommittee on Principles and Procedures for the Committee which was established by Secretarial Order 3405 in 2021. She teaches at UNR in the departments of geography\, and anthropology and is currently updating the book Nevada Place Names\, by Helen Carlson.

SUMMARY:High Noon - February program\, Breaking the Barnyard Barrier: A Woman Veterinarian Paves the Way (Virtual Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:High Noon\nFebruary 18\, 2027\nNoon \nRegister for this Lecture: \nTitle: Breaking the Barnyard Barrier: A Woman Veterinarian Paves the Way \nSpeaker: Dr. Linda Rhodes\, retired veterinarian \nTalk Summary: In the late 1970s\, the golden valley between Utah’s Wasatch Mountains was home to some of the best dairies in the country. That was also where Linda Rhodes\, a newly minted large animal veterinarian\, had to prove that a woman could do what the Mormon dairymen were sure was a man’s job. She was often scared that they were right. Throughout her experience\, she tackled a menagerie of challenging medical and surgical cases that forced her to be fearless. Every bovine life she saved helped her confidence grow\, but each failure left her feeling defeated—as did the mounting tensions between pursuing a demanding career and saving a crumbling marriage. \nIn Breaking the Barnyard Barrier\, Linda Rhodes tells the story of how a woman\, through grit and tears\, made her way in a man’s world and blazed a path that prevailed against career stereotypes. This book was published by the University of Nevada Press. \nLinda Rhodes\, author \nSpeaker Bio: Linda Rhodes began her career as a dairy cow veterinarian after she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania summa cum laude in 1978. After several years in dairy practice\, she was granted a fellowship at Cornell University\, where she obtained her PhD in 1988. The rest of her career was spent in the pharmaceutical industry\, helping to develop medicines for many species of animals. She retired in 2016 and has subsequently served on several corporate and start-up boards in the animal health industry. She has received the Iron Paw Award for her lifetime achievements. Breaking the Barnyard Barrier is her first book.

Readers will discover traditional uses for dozens of familiar Western plants\, including sagebrush\, yarrow\, willow\, bitterbrush\, juniper\, rabbitbrush\, and wild rose. \nMore than a field guide\, this book offers a fascinating window into the deep relationship between people\, plants\, survival\, and healing in the American West. It also serves as a tribute to the traditional plant knowledge developed over generations by Nevada’s Indigenous peoples. \nKaren Dustman\, author \nSpeaker Bio: Karen Dustman is an author\, historian\, and former prosecutor whose work focuses on the people\, places\, and stories of the American West. She is the author of more than thirty books\, including multiple works on Nevada history\, ghost towns\, historic cemeteries\, and the communities of the Sierra Nevada. \nKaren’s latest book\, Healing Plants of Nevada: Medicinal Uses by Indian Tribes of Nevada\, explores the traditional uses of native Nevada plants by Native peoples of the Great Basin. The book builds upon a long-overlooked Nevada research study by incorporating updated plant names\, additional historical context\, and new illustrations. \nKaren’s lifelong interest in history has taken her from archival research and historic preservation projects to speaking engagements throughout Nevada and California. In addition to her nonfiction work\, she also writes fiction under the pen name Abby Rice. \nShe lives in the Sierra Nevada with her husband and an opinionated African Grey parrot named Rocky. \n
