Speaker, Joyce Cox, Nevada Historian
Lecture Title: The Chamber of Commerce
Chamber of Commerce Lecture
Joyce’s talk will illustrate how Reno and northern Nevada were advertised and promoted from the 1920s through the 1970s. Publicists used booklets, pamphlets, billboards, slogans along with television and radio commercials and even special events to promote Reno. Slogans such as “The Metropolis of 100,000 Square Miles of Opportunity” in the 1920s to “Think Reno . . . Always Good Thinking” in the 1960s and 70s and of course “The Biggest Little City” made Reno known around the world.
Joyce Cox Biography
Joyce has lived in the Truckee Meadows (Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County) off and on since 1974. She has worked as a research librarian in Washington, California, and Nevada and has written articles for Nevada in the West, HRPS FootPrints, Online Nevada Encyclopedia, and biographies of Nevada women for Nevada Women’s History Project. Joyce is the author of Images of America Washoe County (2011) and Image of America Sparks (2016). Her latest book to hopefully come out in spring 2021 is Behind the Arch: The Story of Reno, Nevada’s Unique Chamber of Commerce and the Making of the “Biggest Little City in the World.”
