Writers’ Wednesday
October 9th, 2019
5 – 5:30 pm Wine and Cheese
5:30 – 6:30 pm Lecture
Forgotten Tales of Carson Valley
Karen Dustman, guest speaker
Unsolved murders. Brazen stage robberies. A flying cowboy. Even hints of buried treasure. They’re all here in Karen Dustman’s new book, Forgotten Tales of Carson Valley. And best of all, the stories are all true!
Join us on Wednesday, October 9th at 5:30 p.m. as Dustman shares a handful of local history tales from her book. Learn which early Carson Valley couple eloped on horseback — and which local notable they persuaded to marry them. Discover what ugly-duckling building (still standing, barely) was once a school and the “pride of the East Fork School District” in the 1870s. Hear the true tale of a local J.P. suspected of murdering his wife in the 1860s. Find what’s arguably the ugliest early jail building west of the Mississippi (it’s right in Gardnerville). And learn just where in Douglas County locals believed buried stagecoach loot might be found.
Mark your calendar and join us for an entertaining evening as Dustman shares stories from her book and brings Carson Valley history alive!
These lectures feature a different author who takes part in a book signing, a presentation and a question-and-answer session with the audience. A wine and cheese reception precedes the lecture.
The intent of the program is to highlight writers who specifically focus on Nevada, the Great Basin, or the West in general. The authors talk about the content of their books but also share details about the creative process.
Admission is $5 for adults; free for children 17 and younger and for Nevada Historical Society members. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early as seating is limited in our Events Space. For details, call 688-1190.
