5:30 – 6:30 pm – Lecture
This month’s guest speaker is Jerry Aaron and his latest book is called A Chronicle of Nevada’s Great Basin.
Mr. Aaron’s latest book provides the reader with an overview of America’s largest desert. Through straightforward text, and accented by over one hundred photographs, the book delivers an understanding of Nevada and the area of the Great Basin which lies within the Silver State’s boundaries.
The timeline begins with prehistoric man and moves onward to the early explorers who dared to challenge this harsh and uncharted area. The reader travels forward to the wagon train era for a look at the hardships faced by these early pioneers as they confronted the unforgiving rigors this barren land presented. It follows the tracks of the many railroads that once crisscrossed the basin.
Journey along with those who first ventured into this vast, road-less, part of the west following a quest to become the first to conquer the basin via motorized vehicles. Gaze at the sagebrush and playas through the goggles of the early aviators as they ventured forth in their flying machines. Through the book the reader travels from trails of the past to interstates of modern day to realize the importance of Nevada and this area called the Great Basin.
Jerry Aaron has also authored Diesel Smoke Over Asphalt Ribbons and Teamsters, Truckers and Truck Stops.
The intent of the program is to highlight writers that specifically focus on Nevada, the Great Basin or the West in general. The authors talk about the content of their books, but also share details about the creative process.
