Nevada Historical Society is looking to acquire the Nelson building via a landmark property exchange with the University of Nevada, Reno.

News from our Director, Dr. Catherine Magee

We are nearing our trailblazing founder’s wish to have a permanent home for Nevada’s oldest cultural institution. Jeanne Wier’s foresight and gumption is the reason the Nevada Historical Society (NHS) was created in 1904 and became a state institution in 1907. Recognizing that our shared history of this region was disappearing and being forgotten, Dr. Jeanne Wier tirelessly collected Nevadan’s tangible and intangible heritage. The NHS remains a cornerstone of Nevada, the Great Basin, and western history. We continue Wier’s legacy to preserve and make accessible our heritage for current and future generations.

Expanding educational programming, growing collections, and no permanent home has continually forced the NHS to relocate to larger facilities. In each of our four locations, our mission has been to serve the public, provide educational resources and experiences, and ensure access for all. To continue our mission, one goal through time has been to have a permanent, accessible facility.

Today, we are excited to say we are about to reach this goal with the acquisition of the Nelson building, the former Reno Gazette Journal Building, in downtown Reno. This 60,000 square foot facility located at 401 W. Second Street will triple the size of the current NHS building and provide over 60 parking spaces!
The NHS will have room to expand our educational programs, augment public access, and exhibit our growing collections—all in the service of you, our most important asset.

We have one final hurdle to clear with the Nevada state legislature, this is why we are asking you to write to your government representatives in support of NHS’s acquisition of the Nelson building via a landmark property exchange with the University of Nevada, Reno. Your support is critical to NHS’s success and growth. Included, you will find a sample letter and contact information for your state and national representatives. Please write, call, or email them to show your support for the permanent future of the NHS.
