SUMMARY:Nevada History: On The GO! – "Undismayed by Any Mere Man": The Accomplishments of Nevada's Female Lawmakers\, 1919–1959 (Off-site\, SVL)
DESCRIPTION:April 4\, 2026\, 1 – 2:30 pm\nSpeaker: Dr. Dana Bennett\, historian\nIn 1914\, when Nevada women won the right to vote\, they also won the right to hold public office. Four years later\, Sadie Hurst of Reno became the first woman to win a seat in the Nevada Legislature\, blazing the trail for 20 additional women who served in that lawmaking body over the next 40 years. These 21 legislators represented both major political parties\, hailed from nearly every county in the state\, and reflected a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds. This presentation will introduce these remarkable Nevadans\, describe their legislative experiences\, and explore their enduring contributions to the state. \nSpeaker Bio: \nDana Bennett grew up in Old Southwest Reno before it was known as the Old Southwest. After graduating from Reno High School\, she left for college and career moves but often returned to her hometown. She was an early member of HRPS and enjoys reminiscing about the Reno she remembers. Dana holds three history degrees\, including a Masters in women’s history and a PhD earned with a dissertation focused on Nevada’s female legislators before 1960. She and her husband currently live in Midas\, Nevada; she loves to talk about the history of that place\, too! SUMMARY:High Noon - History of Hamilton\, Nevada\, White Pine County’s original county seat (Virtual Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:High Noon\nApril 16\, 2026\nNoon \nRegister for this Lecture: https://events.washoecountylibrary.us/event/16229444 \nSean Pitts\, Director of the East Ely Depot. \nTitle: History of Hamilton\, Nevada\, White Pine County’s original county seat \nSpeaker: Sean Pitts\, Museum Director and historian \nInterior store view\, Hamilton\, Nevada. \nTalk Summary: Explore the rich history of Nevada’s first eastern mining boom using historic maps and photographs. Learn how the 1867 silver discovery of Treasure Hill in White Pine Mining District launched one of the most intense mining rushes in American history\, which would help establish Hamilton by May 1868. \nThe mining boom was intensive because it was the first discovery after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad\, allowing easy transportation to the site. \nHamilton\, Nevada\, was established in May 1868\, and it grew rapidly as a bustling mining town\, becoming the first county seat of White Pine County in 1869. This was a short-lived silver stampede\, 1868 – 1869. Reasons for the decline included the silver was only shallow\, two fires destroyed the main portion of the town\, and then the courthouse; the county seat was moved to Ely in 1887. \nSpeaker Bio: Sean Pitts has a strong educational background and has been instrumental in preserving the history of Ely and the surrounding areas. His work at the museum and in the community has been significant in documenting and sharing the stories of the past. \nAfter studying Museum Administration at Utah State University\, Pitts’ lifelong dream of becoming a museum director materialized in 1989\, hired as the director of the White Pine Public Museum in Ely. Since 1991\, Pitts has been hired by the State of Nevada as director of the East Ely Railroad Depot Museum. \nNevada State Railroad Museum\, East Ely: The East Ely Depot\, built in 1907\, is a fully restored train depot. The visitor’s experience allows them to travel in time through the general offices of the railroad\, including train dispatchers\, crew chiefs\, finance\, medical\, management\, and the company President. Adjacent to the Depot\, the Nevada Northern Railway Foundation provides guided tours of the rail yards\, shops and facilities of the railroad. \n

Before statehood\, territorial leaders and the mining industry recognized the value of international expositions\, participating in 1862’s International Exposition in London\, showcase our region’s mineral wealth. \nNevada’s presence continued at major world’s fairs\, including the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago\, where visitors experienced George Ferris’s iconic wheel and Elko saddle and harness maker G. S. Garcia earned international recognition with gold medals. This success was repeated at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair\, which also featured Nevada’s growing architectural and industrial ambitions. \nThe state’s participation grew with construction of prominent pavilion buildings\, most notably the refined neoclassical Nevada State Pavilion by architect Frederic DeLongchamps for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco\, one for the San Diego exposition\, and for Reno’s 1927 Transcontinental Highway Exposition. \nBy 1940\, Nevada’s focus had shifted from promoting raw resources to attracting visitors and investment\, with the Golden Gate International Exposition marking the state’s final participation in a world’s fair. Together\, these events reflect how Nevada confidently presented its identity\, ambition\, and style to the world as the “Great Silver State.” \nJean-Guy T. Dubé\, historian \nJean-Guy T. Dubé works for the State Historic Preservation Office of Nevada as the National and State Register of Historic Places Coordinator. He is a member of the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum\, Southern Pacific Historic & Technical Society\, and the Virginia & Truckee Railroad Historical Society\, in addition to many others. Dubé received the national Leicester B. Holland Prize in 2017 from the Library of Congress and National Park Service. He is an author\, architectural draftsman and historian. Baumgardner\, Ph.D.\, Curator of Natural History\, NSM-CC \nLearn about the mystery of the sliding bones on the Smith Creek Valley Playa\, in central Nev.\, with guest speaker\, Dr. George Baumgardner\, Curator of Natural History\, NSM\, CC. \nSmith Creek Valley Playa\, in central Nevada\, USA has been mentioned in western literature and stories since the mid-1800s. It was first described by Captain J. H. Simpson of the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers in his 1859 chronicle of the expedition he led to survey a route from Floyd\, Utah to Genoa\, Nevada. It was later mentioned by English explorer Sir Francis Burton in his 1862 description of his journey by stagecoach to the western United States and has had the historic routes of the Overland Trail\, Pony Express\, and intercontinental telegraph line pass over its surface. It even served as the site for an amusing story about the only time renown pilots Chuck Yeager and Neil Armstrong flew together. \nIn July 2013\, a much less historic event occurred when evidence of a unique type of movement by cattle bones across this playa was observed. Individual and articulated skeletal elements were found at the ends of shallow\, furrow-like trails inscribed in the playa surface. These trails\, with their skeletal material\, are like the phenomenon described as “racing” or “sailing rocks” best documented from Racetrack Playa in Death Valley\, California\, USA. As was demonstrated for the rocks of Racetrack Playa\, the material here was probably moved by a combination of wind acting on ice floating on liquid water. \nDr. George Baumgardner with a kangaroo mouse \nGeorge received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Texas A& M University and his Ph.D. from Memphis State University (now University of Memphis). His education and expertise relate to the biology of small/medium size mammals\, reptiles\, & birds; public education regarding these subjects; and museum care for natural history specimens. As of 2026\, he has over 50 years’ experience working in biological collections and museums. Since taking his current position in 1998\, he has studied the habitats\, flora\, and fauna of western North America (primarily Nevada). His responsibilities at the Nevada State Museum\, Carson City include overseeing the museum’s collections of biological and geological specimens and assisting in the preparation of exhibits and educational programming on these subjects. \n  \nWe would like to thank our community partner\, Nevada Sunset Winery for hosting our lecture series. Christina Schlosser\, speaker \nLearn what happens\, the good and bad while working at the DMV with guest speaker Christina Schlosser. \nI will be revealing what goes on behind closed doors\, the lobby and in the parking lot to keep a DMV office functioning. There are so many stories. \nFor ten years I was Branch Manager of Reno/Sparks DMV offices as well as seven rural assessors’ offices that completed vehicle registration and licensing functions. Employee and customer issues were a daily struggle to negotiate. You might hear me repeat words thrown at me. Please do not be offended. \nGuns\, medical emergencies\, overflowing toilets\, lost children\, sex offenders and child abuse were problems I dealt with daily. I retired in 2018\, yet people still ask my advice. I always tell \nChristina Schlosser\, speaker \nthem\, “There have been four Legislative Sessions since then and I have no idea what new laws are in effect.” This presentation will be for entertainment only and hopefully instill a little respect for all DMV employees who must know the law and have great customer service skills. \nChristina Schlosser held entertainment jobs in LA before moving to Reno. Christina went to work for Harrah’s. At Harrah’s she was a member of the stage crew for sixteen years before moving to the front of the house. There she managed Keno\, Bingo and finally the Cashier/Credit Manager. In 2007 she became a Branch Manager at the DMV and directed a total of nine offices in Reno\, Sparks and Rural Counties. She retired in 2018. \n  \n  \n  \nAbandoned equipment in the S. Central Nevada \n2:30 – 3:30 PM:\n \nHistorical Mining in the Military Lands of South-Central Nevada \nJoe Tingley\, author and historian \nLearn about these historic mining camps in South Central Nevada on military test site land today with guest speaker Joe Tingley\, retired mining engineer\, historian and author. \nSouth-central Nevada is home to two large military withdrawals\, the Nevada Test and Training Range (Nellis Range) and the Nevada National Security Site (Test Site). Together these total almost 3.8 million acres of land\, most of which has been closed to public access for the better part of a century. \nSouth-central Nevada was largely bypassed by prospectors during the mining boom that followed discovery of the Comstock in 1858. Attention was directed to this part of the state after the discovery of silver at Tonopah in 1900 and gold at Goldfield in 1902. Between 1902 and about 1908\, gold-bearing rock was found at several places in the Cactus Range\, to the south at Jamestown and Gold Crater\, and to the east at Kawich. Camps sprang at these sites\, but no paying mines were found. Beginning around World War I some of the old camps had a short revival and new discoveries were made at Mellon\, Tolicha\, Clarkdale\, and Wahmonie. \nThis last flurry of activity was no more successful than the first and today little evidence of mining remains in this big expanse of empty land. \nJoe Tingley in a mining shaft S Central NV \nJoe Tingley has degrees in mining engineering from the Universities of Idaho and Nevada. He was the geologist for the Strawberry Tungsten Mine and Chief Engineer at the New Idria Mercury Mine both located in California. Tingley was an exploration geologist for various companies exploring for uranium in Wyoming and Texas\, copper in Arizona and New Mexico\, and gold in Nevada. He worked as a research geologist at the Nevada Bureau of Mining and Geology\, where he remained until his retirement in 2004. Tingley has authored several geologic guidebooks for NBMG and has been an NHS docent for over 5 years. \n  \nWe would like to thank our community partner\, Nevada Sunset Winery for hosting our lecture series. SUMMARY:Nevada History: On The GO! John C. Frémont’s Bumpy Path from Fame to Obscurity (Off-site\, SVL)
DESCRIPTION:John C. Frémont’s Bumpy Path from Fame to Obscurity\nSpecial Nevada Day Program\n \nOctober 3\, 2026\n1:00 to 2:30 pm \nNevada History – On The GO! Lecture 2026\nThe Nevada Historical Society’s building may be closed for an exciting remodel\, but you can still enjoy their fascinating lectures at the Sierra View Library during their closure. NHS Nevada History – On The GO! Series is combining its three history programs that delve into Nevada History\, Lake Tahoe\, and the American Gaming Archives gambling and gaming history. Make sure to visit Sierra View Library on the first Saturday of every month to learn more about Nevada’s history through these engaging talks that are geared towards audiences of all ages. \nSpeaker: Dr. Eugene M. Hattori\, retired\, former Curator of Anthropology\, NSM-CC \nTitle of Talk: John C. Frémont’s Bumpy Path from Fame to Obscurity \nJohn C. Frémont’s Pyramid Lake (Nevada) Camp\, January 1844. \nSummary of Talk: The world-famous “Fremont Street Experience” and the UNR-UNLV “Fremont Cannon” football trophy\, are namesakes of John C. Frémont– a mid-nineteenth-century explorer\, scientist\, soldier\, and politician. Few realize these connections and his past fame. In 1844\, Frémont and his faithful guide and friend\, Kit Carson\, traveled through what is now western Nevada\, with cannon in tow. His official report\, written with the assistance of his loyal and powerful wife Jesse\, became a bestseller following its 1845 publication\, and it launched his international recognition. Nevertheless\, Frémont’s actions were shadowed by controversies\, beginning with bringing a howitzer on a “peaceable” exploring expedition into a foreign county and then abandoning it there. By the end of the century\, the West was settled\, and John C. Frémont was sadly forgotten. \nGene and John C. Frémont’s Mountain Howitzer at the Nevada State Museum\, Carson City. \nSpeaker Bio: Eugene M. Hattori is a Native Nevadan and Sparks High School graduate. He received a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Nevada\, Reno and M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Washington State University. His research specialties include historic and prehistoric archaeology\, and Native American basketry. Gene retired as Curator of Anthropology from the Nevada State Museum in 2024\, and he began his career in museums at the Nevada Historical Society from 1968-1973. He was also employed by the Desert Research Institute\, Bechtel\, Archeo-Tec Consulting\, and the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office. \nWe would like to thank our partner\, the Washoe County Library System and the Sierra View Library for hosting our off-site lectures. \nSierra View Library has been serving communities from Midtown to South Reno since 1987.
