July 1, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Beginning in the mid-1800s, the Truckee Meadows was a “passing through” place. People heading to the California Gold Rush, coming to Washoe for the discovery of Silver, first by horseback and covered wagons, then freight wagons, and by 1868 the railroad arrived. The arrival of the automobile in early 1900 required navigable roads. By 1927, one could drive east coast to west coast, and ultimately from Reno across the Sierra into California. A grand celebration was held, and an arch was built beside the railroad and near the access roads north and south and east and west. Learn how the arch has changed over the years from 1926 to 1987, and again in 2018.
