Artist Statement

Mark Vollmer is an award-winning outdoor photographer & instructor, and freelance writer based in Sparks, Nevada. His illustrated feature articles have appeared in Nevada Magazine, and his images have been widely published in regional books, calendars and brochures. The 2003 publication of his best-selling coffee-table book, Tahoe Rim Trail, Exploring the Jewel, co-photographed by Reno photographer Scott Sady, revealed Mark’s “tread lightly” practice. The University of Nevada Press guidebook series, 50 of the Best Strolls, Walks and Hikes Around Reno (2017) and 50 of the Best Strolls, Walks and Hikes Around Carson City (2020) features Mark’s photographs with author Mike White’s informative text.

Mark’s DVD collaboration StorySongs: From the Soul of the American West, released in 2010, blends his photography with the inspiring music of Reno singer/songwriter Jim Eaglesmith. The DVD is a popular seller at their live performances, and is available at local outlets as well as directly from the artists. Mark & Jim share their live StorySongs programs with schools & libraries as roster artists for the Nevada Arts Council and Pioneer Center Youth Programs.

Mark enjoys sharing his love and passion for photography with workshop students. He has taught classes through Washoe County Parks, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, Elderhostel, Truckee Meadows Community College, and Washoe County School District, as well as private tutoring. In April 2007, TMCC awarded Mark its Excellence in Teaching for the Continuing Education Division. Mark also photographs fragile habitats and pristine Nevada landscapes for local non-profit groups. His photographs have hung in galleries in Reno, Sparks, Sacramento, and South Lake Tahoe. The images on display here reveal his love for the rich natural and cultural heritage of Nevada and the West.

Exhibition begins March 1, 2023 through July 29, 2023.
