NHS Building Renovations…

Have you noticed anything different? The building has received a new color scheme.

While the NHS building has been closed to the public, a lot of work has been happening here. Our building renovation and retrofit has a new roof and HVAC system. Work on updating lighting, electrical, data lines, and security is ongoing. New stairs and ramps, building envelope work that includes painting, lights, and general retrofitting of the exterior, has started and will continue through next summer to ensure the safety of our collections, staff, and visitors.

There is still a lot of work to be done before the museum reopens to the public in August 2026. Staff and volunteers are looking forward to greeting you onsite soon!

NHS Behind the Scenes in the galleries…

Staff and volunteers continue to work on dismantling our Nevada and Reno History Galleries. In this photo, you can see how sparse the gallery is becoming. They are working on condition reports, cataloging, and rehousing collection materials before the building renovations begin in November.

Below, the galleries are wrapped in plastic before phase 2 begins in the permanent gallery space. The NHS director, Dr. Catherine Magee, is working on our 20 Mule Team model, stabilizing some of the plaster under the model base.
