The Adventures of Sam Clemens. During the thirteen months Sam Clemens was in Nevada Territory before hiring on at the Territorial Enterprise, Sam was on a series of get-rich-quick paths that led nowhere.

Robert E. (Bob) Stewart was born in Iowa and raised in Panama, Washington D.C., Indianapolis, New Jersey, and Minnesota, In the latter state he gained a BA in Political Science at Hamline University, then spent two years serving Uncle Sam in Germany. Coming home, he decided to get some credits in Journalism at the University of Missouri, where he married Phyllis Ann Murdock.

They then came to Nevada, where Chris Sheerin had hired him sight unseen as one of two reporters at the Elko Daily Free Press. After retiring from newspaper reporting and state and federal employment, Bob Stewart followed his longtime interest in early Nevada history.

He has written two versions of a history of the mining camp of Aurora, Nevada Territory, and co-edited the University of Nevada “Gold Rush Letters of Ethan Allen Grosh and Hosea Grosh,” writing almost all of the massive endnotes and two appendices. His interest in Mark Twain in Nevada has been a side interest, leading to articles in the Nevada Historical Society Quarterly and the national Mark Twain Journal. He has accepted invitations to deliver talks on Twain twice at the quadrennial Status of Mark Twain Studies conference in Elmira, New York.

The Nevada Historical Society Lake Tahoe Lecture Series explores the many facets of this famous alpine lake through time and the challenges it faces today. Come learn about the region’s geological development, indigenous people, early exploration, environmental issues, and the impacts of tourism and recreation. There is so much to delve into to help tell the story that is uniquely Lake Tahoe.

Make sure to arrive early as we have limited seating available in our Event Space. Don’t forget, we provide free, temporary parking permits to make it easier to visit NHS!
