Title of Program: The Sparks Marina: From Pit to a Jewel
Summary of Program: The Sparks Marina Park has transformed itself from an abandoned aggregate mine known as the “Helm’s Pit” to the jewel of Sparks. This presentation will provide a firsthand look at the history of this area in how it has transitioned from a farm to a mine to the city’s most popular park. This presentation will also discuss how the area has become a successful redevelopment area that has attracted over $1 billion in investment. This presentation will include stops at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial, the Marina Village Planned Development, and the Legends at Sparks Marina and will discuss how the Sparks Marina Park has transformed this area of the city and provide a look at what the future holds for the area
November speaker: Scott Carey
Bio: Scott Carey grew up in Sparks, attended public schools and used the Governor Kenny Guinn Memorial Scholarship to graduate from the University of Nevada, Reno. Over the past two decades Scott has served at the tribal, state, and local levels of government throughout Nevada and has worked on land use planning, economic development, tourism, transportation, and natural resource management issues. Scott received his Master of Science degree in Management & Leadership from Western Governor’s University-Nevada in 2018 and has been a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners since 2020. Scott is a lifetime member and volunteer of the Sparks Heritage Museum and since 2009 has served on the museum’s Board of Trustees.
