October 3 – (Nevada History) John C. Frémont’s Bumpy Path from Fame to Obscurity
Join Dr. Eugene M. Hattori, retired Curator of Anthropology, Nevada State Museum, Carson City for a special Nevada Day program on John C. Frémont– a mid-nineteenth-century explorer, scientist, soldier, and politician, whose namesakes include the world-famous “Fremont Street Experience” and the UNR-UNLV “Fremont Cannon” football trophy. Hosted at the Sierra View Library.
October 14 – (Writers’ Wednesday) The Redemption of Julia Bulette: Murder, Myth & the Hunt for a Serial Killer in Early Virginia City
Author and award-winning journalist Robin Flinchum searches for the truth behind a string of murders in two of the richest cities in the early American West. Hosted at the Knights of Pythias Hall. Her book will be available for sale.
October 15 – (High Noon) Nevada State Library & Archives (NSLA): Collection and Services Program
In honor of Archives Month, Nevada State Librarian and Administrator, Mike Strom and State Archivist Cyndi Shein will discuss the history of the Nevada State Library and Archives’ role in preserving Nevada’s historical and contemporary state collections. They will explain how to access Nevada’s rare historical materials in person, and online resources, discuss their Talking Book Services, and talk about the support NSLA provides for local libraries in Nevada. Make sure to register for this Zoom lecture hosted by our community partner, Washoe County Library.
November 7 – (Nevada History) Refining the Story Josie Reed Ames Pearl Rasmussen Moreasti: A Tale of Bonanza Argentiferous Ore or Barren Tails.
This presentation explores the fascinating story of Josie Reed Ames Pearl Rasmussen Moreasti, an early woman storyteller, prospector and one of Nevada’s most colorful figures, remembered as the “Queen of the Black Rock Desert.”

November 19 – (High Noon) History of the Nevada State Prison
The Nevada State Prison is a hidden and underappreciated element of Nevada’s history. Whorton’s talk about this 150-year-old institution will cover how the criminal and political history of the state and the prison are entwined.
